EPDM roofs are one of the most popular roofing materials in tropical areas because they are watertight, economical and durable. However, EPDM rubber roofing does have some disadvantages.
#1 Water Resistance
EPDM roofs are waterproof, however, they are easily pierced by thorns and nails which can lead to leaks.
#2 Installation Issues
The seams on EPDM rubber roofs are vulcanized, rather than seamed with adhesives or tapes. While vulcanizing does make them watertight it makes them more difficult to install, especially on roofs with complex angles.
#3 Recyclability
EPDM rubber roofing is not recyclable and will need to be discarded once it has reached the end of its useful life.
#4 Cost EPDM roofs are more expensive than traditional asphalt roofs and many types of metal roofs.
If you are considering EPDM rubber roofing for your roof, remember that it is not an all-purpose solution and it may only be appropriate for certain applications. It is best used on low traffic flat roofs in tropical areas.
